The Dead Sea Scrolls: Mysteries of the Ancient World Art Yes Yes In 1947, a significant discovery of ancient Jewish texts was made in a cave near the Dead Sea. Since their discovery, these Dead Sea scrolls have shed light on the major transformations and debates that occurred in ancient worship during the first centuries BCE and CE, leading to the emergence of rabbinic Judaism and Christianity. This exhibition will present six Dead Sea Scrolls complemented by objects excavated from the site near where they were found. Three of the scrolls have never been exhibited, including a portion of one of the three earliest copies of the Hebrew Bibles in existence, and three others have never been shown in New York. Shigeyuki Kihara: Living Photographs Art No Yes This exhibition will present photographs by Shigeyuki Kihara, a Samoan-born multimedia and performance artist who uses photography to explore themes of Pacific culture, identity, colonialism, indigenous spirituality, stereotypes, gender roles, and consumerism. Landscapes Clear and Radiant: The Art of Wang Hui (1632–1717) Art No Yes Wang Hui, the most celebrated painter of late 17th-century China, played a key role in reinvigorating past traditions of landscape painting as well as in establishing the stylistic foundations for the imperially sponsored art of the Manchu Qing court. An artist of protean talent and immense artistic ambition, Wang developed an all-embracing synthesis of historical landscape styles that constituted one of the greatest innovations in the arts of late imperial China. The exhibition will feature 27 masterpieces by Wang Hui from the Taipei and Beijing Palace Museums, the Shanghai Museum, and several North American collections, including five outstanding works from the Metropolitan's permanent collection.
